Today is January 9th, and we celebrate the Balloon Ascension Day, commemorating the first hot air balloon journey that took place on January 9, 1973, at Independence Square in Philadelphia, United States. Jean Pierre Blanchard, accompanied by then-President George Washington, made his inaugural balloon flight.
However, this wasn’t the first flight in history. The actual milestone occurred almost 200 years earlier on June 4, 1783, carried out by the Montgolfier brothers in Versailles (Paris), who invented this means of transportation, considered the first aerial vehicle in history. Their early experiments involved inverted paper bags over fire, leading them to discover their ascent, prompting further investigation. In 1782, they launched a large silk bag of 18 cubic meters, ascending to 250 meters.
You’ve probably seen images of hot air balloons soaring over Cappadocia or know someone who has recently flown over these unique Turkish formations. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most renowned places to experience this adventure.
At Believe, we love these air thrills!
But it’s not the only one. Did you know that in Catalonia alone, there are three of the top 10 places for hot air balloon rides in Spain?
Empordà (Girona): sea and mountains from above.
La Cerdanya: navigate the skies overlooking the Pyrenees.
La Garrotxa: an impressive volcanic area and one of the most beautiful parks in the region
And in all these locations, we can organize a high-flying experience, adding our touch of magic! That’s why we always say it’s a high-flying event design!

What are you waiting for? Let’s take off!
In the meantime: here are some interesting facts:
- Flights are typically conducted in the morning for safety and optimal weather conditions.
- Most flights can reach an altitude of 200 to 900 meters above ground.
- Propane is used as fuel to heat the balloon’s air and is distributed in special gas cylinders.
- Most balloons can accommodate approximately 8 to 16 passengers.
- The most used balloon model today has a diameter of 17 meters at its widest part and a height of 23 meters from the ground to the crown, holding 2,200 cubic meters.
- Assembling a balloon requires four people, and the process takes about 30 minutes.
