The immortals Kings!
January 5th in the evening. Everyone is going to the Parade.
From the middle east, crossing the sea, traversing mountains & villages, come the most famous immortals Kings in history!
Yes, they must be immortals because, even though there is no accurate data about the origin of the Three Wise Men, it is believed that this tradition began in the 4th century in the Roman Empire. And during the celebration of the festival in honor of the god Saturn,, a common bean was hidden inside bread for fun. There we go, our first “Tortel de Reyes” appeared! (Wikipedia link to Tortel)
The names “Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltasar” first appeared in a famous mosaic from the 6th century in Ravenna, Italy. The adoration of the Kings became a pictorial motif that reached its peak during the Renaissance.
But surely you already knew all this!
What you may not be aware of , is that the commemoration is not limited to Spain alone; in reality, several European countries, including Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Belgium, Portugal, and France, also celebrate it. For example, in France, families gather to share a cake known as “Galette des Rois.” In other words, once again, our famous “Tortel de Reyes”!
A magical and exciting day for children who take to the streets to see the arrival of the Three Wise Men from the East in their floats. They bring the gifts that they will find under their Christmas trees the following morning. A night of nerves and emotions.
Emotions that even now, as adults, persist in the memories of many. Memories imbued with lights, floats, majestic costumes, music, flying candies, and dozens of gifts wrapped in bright and vividly colored papers.
